Graphics quality isn't quite a match for most monochrome lasers, as there is obvious banding on full-page graphics and a tendency for thin lines to disappear. But the 1720dn's quality is still good enough to handle just about any text you may want to print, including desktop-publishing documents and legal contracts with small type. You can find printers that print a higher percentage of fonts well at small sizes-including the 1022n. It had well-formed characters at 4 points on just under half of our test fonts, and even the most heavily stylized fonts with thick strokes were easily readable at 10 points.
Text is a touch below the best quality available. The 1720dn's output quality is reasonably typical for a monochrome laser overall. Another direct competitor, the HP LaserJet 1022n, took a significantly slower 8:31. The same comment applies to the 1720dn, which essentially tied the E250dn on our business applications suite, at 6 minutes 21 seconds (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, Both printers are among the fastest in their price range. When I reviewed the directly competitive Lexmark E250dn, I pointed out that its speed was one of the strongest arguments for buying it. Setting it up on a network is easy: Find a spot for it, remove the packing materials, load paper, connect the power cord and cable, and run the automated installation routine.Īs you might guess from the 30-ppm rating, the 1720dn's speed is a strong point. The printer weighs 25.1 pounds and measures just 10.0 by 15.6 by 13.6 inches (HWD), which makes it light enough to move around easily and small enough to take up less room on a desktop than most ink jet printers. Setting up the 1720dn is typical for a small monochrome laser. Dell says the speeds in its tests are the same for both models.
(Printing full-page images on both sides of the page takes twice as much memory as printing on one side.) Output quality should be the same for both models, and speed should be similar, although I tested the 1720dn over a network, and the 1720's speed may be affected by the USB connection. The 1720dn adds the network connector, a built-in duplexer, and more standard memory.
